One of the key features of Adobe Illustrator is the Appearance panel, which allows users to create complex and dynamic graphic elements by applying multiple attributes and effects to objects.
You can open the Appearance panel from the Window menu or find it under the Properties panel.
Once you find the panel, you can make changes to an object’s appearance at any time, including adjusting colors, modifying strokes, or tweaking effects. Plus, the edits are non-destructive.

How to Find the Appearance Panel in Adobe Illustrator
As I mentioned before, you can find the Appearance panel under the Properties panel when an object is selected, or you can open it from Window > Appearance.
Once you’ve opened the Appearance panel, you will see a window that allows you to modify the appearance attributes of selected objects. The panel provides a comprehensive view of all applied attributes and effects, allowing you to edit, remove, or add new effects to enhance your design elements.
Key Functions and Features of the Appearance Panel
Stroke and Fill: The Appearance panel provides quick access to stroke and fill options for selected objects.
By clicking on the stroke or fill attribute, you can adjust their color, opacity, weight, and other properties. Additionally, you can apply multiple strokes and fills to a single object, giving you greater creative flexibility.
Effects: The Effects section in the Appearance panel is a treasure trove of possibilities. Clicking on the “fx” button at the bottom of the panel opens a menu of effects such as Drop Shadow, Inner Glow, Gaussian Blur, and more.
For example, I just added a Pucker & Bloat effect and you’ll see it on the Appearance panel together with the fill and stroke color.
Opacity and Blending Modes: The Appearance panel allows you to control the opacity and blending modes of selected objects. By adjusting the opacity, you can create transparency effects and control the visibility of underlying artwork.
Blending modes, on the other hand, determine how colors interact with each other, offering various blending options such as Multiply, Screen, Overlay, and more.
Appearance Stacking Order: The Appearance panel also lets you control the stacking order of applied effects and attributes. By dragging and rearranging them within the panel, you can change the order in which effects are applied, thus altering the visual outcome of your design.
Saving Graphic Styles: One of the powerful features of the Appearance panel is the ability to save graphic styles. After customizing an object’s appearance, you can save it as a graphic style, allowing you to apply the same attributes to other objects with a single click.
This feature is particularly useful when maintaining consistency throughout your design.
