Hi, my name is Nancy and I’ve been using iMovie for several years to make quick and simple videos. In this article, I will share some insights on how to utilize iMovie’s titles feature to add and edit text in your videos.

Let’s get started.

How Do You Add Text to an iMovie Video?

Normally, adding text to your project is a step that comes later in the editing process, after you’ve already incorporated all of the video clips and audio tracks into your project.

To add text to your movie, you can begin by going to the browser menu and clicking on Titles. From there, you’ll have access to a library of over 50 title styles to choose from. Many of the title styles come with built-in animations and have layouts that position the text either at the top, middle, or bottom of the screen.

Simply pick the style that best fits your project and drag it onto the timeline to add it to your movie.

How Do You Customize Text in iMovie?

To customize your text in iMovie, you can access the Title Settings in the editor toolbar. Within the settings, you can modify the font style, text size, text alignment, make the text bold, italic or outlined, and change the text color. It’s important to note that you are unable to move the text box freely within the frame.

Can I Change the Fonts in iMovie?

If you want to change the font of your text in iMovie, go to the Title Settings and click on Font. In the dropdown menu you will see many different fonts to choose from.

However, to see the complete list of fonts available, you’ll need to scroll all the way to the bottom and select the option Show Fonts

A new popup window will appear, which allows you to edit the text and change the font directly from within this window.

You can also click on the circle icon with the 3 dots to see additional customization options.

For instance, if you want to add emojis to your title text, select the Characters option and then click on the Emoji tab. Here, you can browse through all of the emojis which are categorized into different themes.

How to Change the Text Speed in iMovie

By default, any title text added to the timeline will be set to appear in the video clip for a duration of 4 seconds. However, if you wish to change the duration of how long a title appears on screen, follow these steps:

First, click on the text clip and move the pointer to the end of the clip. Then, press and drag the clip to either shorten or lengthen it, which will increase or decrease the duration accordingly. This method is recommended as it allows you to easily align the text with your video clip.

Another way to change the duration of the title text is by clicking on the Clip Information icon in the editor toolbar. Then, in the duration section you can input the desired amount of seconds you want. Once you’ve entered the duration, press the Enter key on your keyboard to apply the changes.

Here are some frequently asked questions about using text in iMovie.

How Many Titles Can I Use Per Video Clip?

You can add multiple text titles to your video clip as long as they fit within the duration of the clip. In the example below, you can see 4 title clips included in the 20 second video clip.

Can I Disable the Text Effects in iMovie?

Unfortunately, you cannot disable the text effects on the title styles because they are built-in animations. The best option is to select a title style that does not have any effects.

Final Thoughts

Adding text to your video is only possible through the Titles feature. The only drawback is that it doesn’t allow you to move the text around once it’s placed on the screen. However, iMovie compensates for this limitation by offering a range of title styles with interesting effects that animate the text as it appears on the screen.

There are also many unique ways to personalize your text, such as by adding symbols, emojis, and changing the font styles.
