Where is the Smooth Tool in Adobe Illustrator & How to Use It

The Smooth Tool in Adobe Illustrator transforms rough and jagged paths into polished and elegant curves. Whether you’re drawing freehand or working with existing paths, the Smooth Tool can save the day and make your designs look incredibly polished.

So, where is the Smooth Tool in Adobe Illustrator?

If you’re using the Advanced toolbar, you should find the Smooth Tool in the same menu as the Pencil Tool

If you can’t find the Smooth Tool in Adobe Illustrator, make sure to check out the Edit Toolbar option in the main toolbox and look under the Draw category!

You will need to click on the three dots that represent the Edit Toolbar option and there, you will  find the Smooth Tool. under the “Draw” category.  If you are not sure what each icon represents, simply hover your mouse over each and a name shall appear. 

How to Use the Smooth Tool in Adobe Illustrator

Follow these simple steps to get started using the magic of the Smooth Tool in Adobe Illustrator:

Step 1: Before you start smoothing away, make sure you have the path or paths you want to refine properly selected. You can use the Selection Tool (V) to choose the desired paths. 

Step 2: Choose the Smooth Tool from the toolbar. 

You can adjust the Smooth Tool options to dictate the intensity of the smoothing effect. 

You’ll find a slider there that lets you adjust the “Smoothness” level. Slide it to the left for gentle smoothing or to the right for a more robust effect. Experiment and find the perfect balance between control and automation.

Step 3: With your path selected and the desired smoothness set, it’s time to work your magic. Simply click and drag the Smooth Tool along the path, and watch the jagged edges and uneven curves smoothen out like a gentle breeze caressing your artwork.

While the Smooth Tool is fantastic, but it’s not a one-size-fits-all solution. Be mindful of which paths you apply it to, as it may not work well with certain intricate designs. Experimentation is key!
