To resize a frame in Figma while still keeping all the content inside, press and hold the Command button for Mac, or the Ctrl key for Windows, and start dragging a frame by any of the four corners.
Hi! My name is Yana, and Figma is my favorite design tool to work with. Along with many of the great features, Figma does come with certain limitations, so I learned some tips and tricks that you should know while working with this software.
In this article, I will share a couple of methods to resize only a frame in Figma without moving the content inside of it.
Let’s get started.
- By default, the content inside the resized frame will adjust based on its constraints.
- Remember to hold the Shift+Command key for Mac and Shift+Ctrl for Windows while resizing the frame to maintain the proportions.
- Install the Set Layer Size plugin to help you resize the frame to specific dimensions.
How to Resize Frame in Figma Without Moving Content
Figma is a great tool that allows you to create a responsive design for different platforms and devices using constraints and auto-layout.
But there are situations when you only need to resize the frame without changing the content inside, and it may not be easy to do at first. However, there are a few ways you can do it.
Method #1: Setting the Exact Frame Size
This method is effective when you know the exact dimensions of the frame you want.
If all the elements inside the frame are constrained to the left and top, you can simply enter the dimensions in the frame settings panel. The frame will change accordingly while the content stays unaffected.
When the elements inside the frame have an auto layout or if it has different constraints, you can install the Set Layer Size plugin from the Resources tab in the top menu. It will help you change the size of the frame while keeping the content in the same place.
After you install and run the plugin, it will ask you to enter the frame dimensions. Once you hit the Set Layer Size button, it will change them accordingly. You can learn more information about using plugins in Figma here.
Method #2. Resizing the Frame Freely
While this method is simple, it may not provide accurate results and it might take some time when you need a frame with specific dimensions.
First, press and hold the Command key for Mac or the Ctrl key for Windows, and drag your frame by one of the corners. You will see that the content inside the frame is not moving while you are resizing the frame.
To resize the frame proportionally to the original, press and hold the Shift+Command/Ctrl key combination.
Depending on your needs, you can resize a frame in Figma by using one of the methods mentioned above.
Figma is a great design tool, and it’s helpful to know some tricks and tips to work efficiently with it, just like any other software.
