How to Underline Text in Adobe InDesign

You can easily add underline to text from the Character panel, or go to Type > Character > Underline. There are also shortcuts that you can use.  The keyboard shortcuts to underline text are Command + Shift + U for Mac and Ctrl + Shift + U for Windows

It is common to use underline when you would like to highlight something. I’m not talking about the title but the subtitle. Sometimes it is good to highlight with colors, but as usual, it could be distracting, that is why I like to use underline.

Method 1: Character Panel

Follow the steps below to underline your text in InDesign.

Step 1: Select the text you want to underline.

Step 2: Open the Character panel from the overhead menu Type > Character. 

Step 3: Click on the options menu in the top right corner of the Character panel.  

Choose Underline

You should see the selected text with a line underneath the text. 

How to Edit the Text Underline

Use the Underline Options dialog box to specify the appearance of the underline. 

You can use the Preview box to see updated changes. For example, you can change the underline type, stroke, or line color. Press OK when finished.

Method 2: Underline Text Keyboard Shortcuts

Keyboard shortcuts usually help you work faster and here’s no exception. With the text selected, you can quickly add an underline to text in InDesign using the Command + Shift + U (Mac OS) or Ctrl + Shift + U (Windows) keys. 

If you want to undo the underlined text action, simply use the undo keyboard shortcut Command/Ctrl + Z, or use the same keyboard shortcut Command/Ctrl + Shift + U to remove the text underlined.
