What is a Superscript?
A superscript refers to text that appears slightly higher than the regular-sized text line, typically in the top right corner. Superscripts often have a specific purpose or represent something significant.
They are commonly seen in mathematical equations, symbols placed above brand names, logos, or products, and are also used in footnotes or endnotes to provide additional information.
Here are 3 examples of how superscripts are used:
- When we use a superscript in math, it means we need to multiply a number by itself a certain number of times. For example, 2³ means to multiply 2 by itself three times. The superscript is a way to show this repeated multiplication in a shorter and simpler form.
- The copyright symbol, ©, like a protective shield for things like products, ideas, or creative works. It’s a superscript symbol that gives the person who made or owns something the exclusive rights to it. When someone puts the copyright symbol on their work, individuals can establish ownership and establish their rights to reproduce, distribute, display, or perform the protected content.
- When you want to cite specific information like a paraphrase, quotation, or data, you can use footnote. To do this, you place a superscript number at the end of the sentence that contains the information you want to cite. This superscript number serves as a reference point, guiding readers to the related footnote where they can find more details about the cited information.
How to Create a Superscript in Canva
While Canva does not have a built-in superscript formatting option, you can still achieve the desired text effect. Here’s how you can do it in Canva, using a trademark symbol as an example:
Step 1: Open a new project design or access a previous one in Canva.
Step 2: Once you’re in the project design layout, navigate to the left sidebar menu and click on the Text tab. From there, select a text style that suits your preference. Now, create two text boxes: one for the main text and another for the superscript text.
Step 3: you can adjust the size of the superscript “TM” text to make it smaller. You can achieve this by either entering a specific value into the font size option or by dragging one of the corners of the text box to resize it. Once you are satisfied with the size, position the superscript symbol in the top right corner, above the regular-sized text.
Step 4: Highlight both text boxes by clicking and dragging your cursor over them. Once they are both selected, click on the Group button or use the keyboard shortcut Command/Ctrl + G. This action will group the elements together, allowing you to move them freely as a single unit.
Now the elements are grouped together and you can move it freely. That’s it! You’ve successfully created a superscript effect with just a few simple clicks.
Can I Paste a Superscript into Canva?
If you have a particular superscript symbol in mind or if you already have superscript text you want to use, you can easily copy and paste it into a text field in Canva.
You can discover free superscript symbols online or generate your own superscripts using a word processing application like Microsoft Word or Google Docs, which already offer built-in superscript formatting.
