Adobe Illustrator is a powerful tool for creating and editing vector graphics, and one of its essential features is the ability to create smooth, clean lines because they bring a touch of elegance, enhance readability, provide precision and control, ensure seamless scalability, and contribute to professional branding.

Whether you’re a graphic designer, illustrator, or artist, understanding how to smooth lines in Illustrator can greatly enhance the quality and precision of your work.

My name is Kerry and in this article, I will dive into the art of smoothing lines in Adobe Illustrator as well as the steps to bring your visions to life with precision and finesse. The concept might seem simple at first glance, but beneath the surface lies a world of aesthetic finesse and design prowess waiting to be discovered!

3 Ways to Smooth Lines in Adobe Illustrator

You can directly draw a smooth line using the Pen tool in Adobe Illustrator. If you’re trying to smooth a corner or anchor point intersection, you can use the Direct Selection Tool or Smooth tool to edit anchor points and make a line smoother in Adobe Illustrator.

To begin smoothing your lines, open Adobe Illustrator and create a new document or open an existing one.

Method 1: Pen tool

Select the Pen Tool (P) from the toolbar. The Pen Tool allows you to create both straight and curved lines with precision, making it ideal for line smoothing.

Click on the canvas to set the starting point, and then click and drag again to create a curve line. You’ll see a smooth curve.

If you don’t drag as you click to create the second anchor point, the anchor point intersection isn’t smooth.

Tips: adding or removing anchor points can help further refine the smoothness of your lines. To add an anchor point, select the Add Anchor Point Tool (+) and click on the line where you want to insert the point. To remove an anchor point, select the Delete Anchor Point Tool () from the toolbar and click on the unwanted point.

Method 2: Direct Selection Tool

Select the Direct Selection Tool (A) from the toolbar and click on a point to select an anchor point. You’ll see a circle that you can drag inward to round the anchor point intersect corner.

You can also select multiple anchor points to smooth them. With the anchor points converted to smooth points, you can now adjust the handles to refine the curvature of the line.

Click and drag the handles to manipulate the curvature of the line. Experiment with different handle positions to achieve the desired level of smoothness.

Method 3: Smooth Tool

For additional control over line smoothness, you can use the Smooth Tool. Select the Smooth Tool from the toolbar and click and drag along the line. The Smooth Tool automatically adjusts the anchor points and Bezier handles to create a smoother appearance. Be careful not to overdo it, as excessive smoothing can result in loss of detail or distortion.

Take the time to zoom in and inspect the line closely. Make sure a path is selected when you use the Smooth tool, otherwise, you won’t be able to smooth the line.
