You can save an Indesign file as a PDF in Adobe InDesign by choosing File > Export.

As usual, I use Adobe InDesign to make nice layouts and designs for books, magazines, brochures, and more. When the InDesign file is done, you can prepare the PDF for publishing.

In this article, I will show you how to save an Indesign file as a high-quality PDF in Adobe InDesign.

How to Save Adobe InDesign File as PDF

In this step-by-step tutorial, I’ll show you how to save an Adobe Indesign document as a PDF file without losing quality, how to export an InDesign file to EPUB, and many more.

Follow these steps to save the file as a pdf in InDesign.

Note: I work with both PC and Mac. The steps to save the file as a PDF in Adobe InDesign are the same. 

Step 1: Set Up Your Document

The easiest way to save the INDD file as a PDF in Adobe InDesign is to find the Export panel from the overhead menu File > Export

Step 2: Arrange the Text

Select Format > Adobe PDF (Print) and press Save

Step 3: Choose the Export Settings

Set any options in the Export Adobe PDF dialog box, then click Export to output the PDF.

For example, you can add bleeds, choose the pages, print settings, etc.

If you want to print out your work, I’d recommend choosing High-Quality Print as the Adobe PDF preset.

Can’t save your InDesign file as a PDF in InDesign? 

Here’s what you can do: Restart InDesign. InDesign creates a new set of default preference files. If your print or export problem persists, then you can restore your original preferences by renaming your old preference files back to their original names: InDesign SavedData and InDesign Defaults.

How to save a high-quality PDF from InDesign?

Go to File > Adobe PDF Presets pull-down menu. An additional side menu will open, select “High-Quality Print” from the menu. A window with the Export palette will open.

How to make the InDesign file size smaller without losing quality?

If you would like to reduce the InDesign file size for PDF without losing quality, first, make the lines thinner in the raster images. The thinnest lines should be no less than 2-3 pixels wide.

Check how heavy are your vector images. Adjusting transparencies can also affect page regeneration time.

If your InDesign file exporting blurry in PDF treats placed PDFs as images, not text, it may be rendering PDFs at normal resolution (72ppi). To fix this, change the Image Quality setting (under Advanced in the in5 export dialog) to HD (so that it renders images as HD as well).
