How to Change Artboard Size in Adobe Illustrator

In Adobe Illustrator, the artboard is a blank canvas where users can construct their key design components. The design elements or artistic creations that are contained in the artboards are the ones that are exported in the many formats that you select.

The use of many artboards makes it simple to manage multiple design elements. Following that, you can select to print them or export them as separate assets. Users can design an artboard to suit their needs and then resize it to fit the piece of work.

My name is Aly, I have been a graphic designer for many years and work with Adobe Illustrator almost daily. I am even certified in Illustrator. In this article, I will be showing you how to change the sizing of your artboard in Adobe Illustrator. Follow the steps below to learn how!

Method 1: Artboard Panel

Follow the steps below to better understand how to change the size of your artboard using the Artboard panel.

Step 1: Adobe Illustrator by default prompts you to enter an artboard size that is appropriate for your work before you can create a working document. For this example, just go ahead and pick a random template like listed below.

Step 2: Once you have chosen an artboard template you should see it on your screen. The list of every artboard you used in your project can also be seen in the Artboard panel on the right side of the document.

If you don’t see the Artboard panel on the right-hand side, go up to Window > Artboard and select it. It should now be accessible.

Step 3: Your screen should now look something like shown below.

Step 4: Holding down the Shift (Windows) or Command (Mac) key while selecting numerous artboards (If you have them) in the Artboards panel allows you to select the artboards you want to resize.

Step 5: The window’s size and position will all be displayed together with the dimension values when you do this. The W (width) and H (height) text box’s contents can be modified. As a result, the selected artboards’ size will alter.

You might need to adjust or move the elements inside each artboard once you’ve achieved the necessary Artboard size. Simply select the objects and change their size and location to accomplish that.

Method 2: Use the Artboard Tool (Keyboard Shortcut Shift + O)

By using the artboard tool, you can change the sizing, just follow the steps below.

Step 1: Have your document open, and find and select the Artboard Tool from the left-hand side menu.

Step 2: With the Artboard Tool selected, your artboard or artboards will have blue running ants around them. This lets you know that you are in the edit mode of the artboard.

From here, you can grab any of the four corners on your current artboard and drag it to the size you desire. Otherwise, to the right-hand side, you can enter the values you will need in the W (Width) and H (Height) areas. Once you are done, press Enter

Final Thoughts

The way Adobe Illustrator manages document resizing is distinctive. You are given access to a specific tool that is practical and easy to use in place of exploring the menu system to find the document’s properties.

As there are multiple methods to alter the artboard size, pick which way works best for you. Personally, I like to use the keyboard shortcut if I need to change the size, just because it’s a quick and easy way.
