Hi the AST team, I accidentally removed some photos off my Olympus xD picture card. Now I can find them nowhere in my camera or on my computer. Not sure if it's too late, but I'm just wondering what's the best way (if there is any) to recover the deleted pics from Olympus camera? Thanks.
If you don't have a backup at hand, the only way to recover your Olympus pictures is to use a digital photo recovery software (see our list here).
However, I have to warn you, though, that recovery chance is not 100% guaranteed due to the nature of data recovery.
Meanwhile, the first thing you should do, as we always point out beforehand - DO NOT take additional pictures or videos using your Olympus camera. It's best to gently remove the memory card out of your device and put it in a safe place.
Why you should do that?
It's because when you delete something off a storage media (be it a memory card or flash drive) through a digital camera or a computer; the data are still intact there but invisible. If you continue generating new data to the same storage, chances are the old data can be written over. If overwritten, the data becomes unrecoverable for good.
Olympus Photo Recovery Software
Note: Olympus does not provide data recovery software on their own. You'll have to use a third-party recovery software.
We recommend you give Stellar Phoenix Photo Recovery a try, because our team has managed to use this program and retrieved many lost media items that many other alternatives (especially those freeware) failed to find.
Besides, the program itself is extremely intuitive and available for both Windows PCs and Apple Mac machines. You should have no problem handling it all by yourself.
A 5-Step Guide to Recover Your Olympus Pictures using the Recovery Software
Step 1: Find a computer (PC or Mac), turn it on and connect your Olympus xD card to the computer. You can do so via a card reader, or the USB cable that comes with your camera.
Step 2: Get Stellar Photo Recovery program and install it on your computer. Be sure to get the right version depending on whether you use a PC or a Mac.
Step 3: Open the software, select the disk your Olympus camera xD card represents, follow the instructions to conduct a scan.
Step 4: Preview the found items once the scanning process is complete. Note: it may take extra minutes, be patient.
Step 5: Recover your deleted pictures and save them to another drive.
Warning: do not save the files back to your card again as it may cause partial data overwriting.
Some tips you may find helpful
Technology has its life cycle. Olympus xD picture cards, or memory cards in general, tend to have a shorter life than you think. Thus, it's best practice to always use several smaller capacity cards, rather than holding a large-volume one just in case.
In worst situations, you only lose a small portion of your precious photographs. In the meantime, remember to use your laptop computer or external drive to transfer your new images at the end of the day after you finish shooting. Backup is king in the digital age.
