TrueCrypt is a free yet open source software application which can be used to create a virtual encrypted disk within a file and mount it as a virtual drive. The encrypted items can be accessed via a drive letter. Any file that is stored on this virtual drive is automatically encrypted on-the-fly, and can only be accessed while the drive is mounted with the correct password or key. Individual algorithms supported by TrueCrypt are AES, Serpent, and Twofish. Additionally, five different combinations of cascaded algorithms are available: AES-Twofish, AES-Twofish-Serpent, Serpent-AES, Serpent-Twofish-AES and Twofish-Serpent. The cryptographic hash functions used by TrueCrypt are RIPEMD-160, SHA-512, and Whirlpool. Note: the free app can be installed on a portable drive unless you want to encrypt your system partitions.
- Encrypt an entire partition as well as USB flash drive or hard drive.
- Support encrypting a partition or drive where Windows is installed (pre-boot authentication).
- Parallelization and pipelining allow data to be read and written as fast as if the drive was not encrypted.
- Encryption can be hardware-accelerated on modern processors.
- Provide plausible deniability, in case an adversary forces you to reveal the password.
- Automatic, real-time and 100% transparent.

TrueCrypt Reviews on the Internet
“TrueCrypt is loaded with powerful features that users concerned with protecting data from prying eyes will find robust and comprehensive. You can store your encrypted data in files or partitions with this program. The useful tips in the extensive help manual and volume-creation wizard provide excellent guidance...TrueCrypt is not for the casual encryption explorer. Be sure to thoroughly understand what you're doing with the program before you do something regrettable.” – from CNET TrueCrypt Review, giving 4.5 stars.
“As far as I can tell, True Crypt is so good it seems to have knocked other competing commercial software off the map. I use this every day to encrypt and protect sensitive data like my passwords and other sensitive information, including large files of sensitive tax data...I have set this up for other people, and once set up, they use it quite easily securely for years.” – by JohnTesla from Snapfiles.com, 5-star full rated.
